Tips for Planning Your Family’s Outfits:
Choose a Color Palette: For my photography and editing aesthetic, I like for my clients to dress in light or neutral colors. It may seem like autumn calls for bold colors and jewel tones, but I believe that neutral colors are much cleaner, classic, and look beautiful on every complexion regardless of the season.
What to Avoid: Bold, dark, and neon colors are distracting and can create unwanted casts on your skin that are difficult to remove in editing. Busy patterns should also be avoided - stick to solids and/or minimal prints! My rule of thumb for prints is that it should be limited to one person in a family of 3-4, or two people in a family 5-6.
Start with Mom: Perhaps you’ve had your eye on a new dress, or you may even have something beautiful already hanging in your closet! The color palette for the rest of your family’s outfits should be determined by the dress or outfit you’re wearing. If you’re wearing a subtle print, then other family members’ outfits should play off of the colors from your outfit.
Styles for Everyone: For mom, I love a flowy maxi or midi dress paired with sandals, boots, or booties. For dad, I recommend khakis or light colored jeans paired with a long-sleeved button down, a henley sweater, or a quarter-zip pullover sweater. And lastly, your kiddos: rompers, bubbles, and sweater + pant option for little boys; dresses for little girls. Pro Tip: Be sure to bring a back-up outfit for your diapered littles!
Stay True to Your Family’s Style: As your family photographer, I don’t take for granted the investment you’re making in preserving these special memories for your family. It’s easy to get swept up in the current trends, but I recommend selecting outfits that reflect what your family wears normally, or a slightly elevated version of this (think what you’d wear to a nice brunch or daytime bridal/baby shower).
